Have You Made these Fitness Training Mistakes?

We all make mistakes, regardless of the aspect of our life. I made many fitness mistakes as I was growing up and learning the process of the body. Right now I am dipping my toes into the world of internet marketing and trying to build my business. I decided to hire a coach and learn from someone who has done it so that I don’t make silly mistakes that might cost me a lot of money.

When it comes to fitness and training, I see people making TONS of mistakes every day. There are many common mistakes that people make that can halt their fitness progress and those are things like not eating enough, eating TOO much, becoming sedentary and destroying their metabolism, and performing exercises incorrectly. I know all of these things are serious, but come on, let’s have some fun with this….and be sure to stay away from these people at the gym, because I know that NONE of you are doing any of this crap…. (right?)

The Cardio Queen: I want to lose weight, so I’m going to jump on the elliptical and get my daily dose of 60 minutes of cardio while watching Dr. Phil after I have sat on my butt at work for 8 hours. That’s a solid 5 hours of cardio per week. 5 hours and all you are doing are burning a few hundred calories. The metabolism of this person is probably shot to hell and there is certainly no 36 hour post workout metabolic boost!

The Pink Weight User: No, strength training does not mean bicep curls, lateral raises and tricep kick backs for 1 set of 25 repetitions. This mode of training is inefficient and will do nothing for helping you develop a lean, toned body. Yes I know you are afraid of getting “bulky” but let me tell you, if you are doing anything for reps of 25, you are probably more likely to develop a look that you don’t want because that muscle is under a lot of tension. But then again, you are only using 2 pounds so come to think of it, the benefit is pretty much zero!

The 2 hour gym-goer: 1 set of bicep curls; rest for 5 minutes, checks text messages in between, does the second set, rest 5 minutes and repeats this cycle. What did you accomplish? Well you probably exercised a few thumb muscles with all of that texting and you pissed off your boss because you were at the gym for 2 hours. Then you are pissed off because you never see any results from the gym, so maybe you should go longer? Duration means NOTHING when it comes to training and losing body fat. You must go for short, intense workouts that will get your metabolism going like crazy. Small exercises like curls will also do nothing.

The “beach muscle” guy: I understand the theory, a ripped chest and great biceps make you look awesome. But does the forward head tilt and rounded shoulder action look awesome? I don’t know, it kind of looks like a caveman to me. I’m ready for your knuckles to be dragging on the ground pretty soon. Most of these guys have never done a proper row or pull up in their life. If they do these exercises, they are dominated by bicep and trapezius contraction and there is no scapular depression (dropping the shoulders down and back) to really develop strong back muscles and great posture. Try a few, fellas!

The “eat like a triathlete” guy: You do not need a banana during your 1 mile run. You also do not need your camelback water dispenser strapped to your waist. I actually saw a guy eating a Cliff bar in the gym the other day, during his workout! Are you kidding me? I’m sure you are not that depleted and your little run will not dehydrate you. If you are properly fueling and drinking throughout the day, this is completely unnecessary and just makes you look pretty silly.

These are just a few funny characters that I come across during my days in the gym. Don’t become a victim of any of these things if you are serious about making fitness, fat loss, and training progress. Stick to 5-6 small meals/snacks, drink plenty of water, perform multi-joint strength movements, perform interval conditioning circuits, and set specific short term and long term goals to achieve great success!
